Snuggies For Dogs

Chicago Tribune:

Not content with conquering the world of human fashion, the folks who brought us the Snuggie (”The Blanket with Sleeves!”) are now taking aim at man’s best friend.

The Snuggie for Dogs — available in two colors and four sizes — has just hit the market. And it promises to do for Little Spanky what the original Snuggie did for Little Spanky’s owner last holiday season.

“The original Snuggie blanket was such a success, we decided to extend the product line to include the entire family, which, for many of us, means a dog,” said Anne Flynn, director of marketing for Allstar Products Group, the Hawthorne, N.Y., firm that sells all things Snuggie.

Pets are Pampered, Even During Recession

A new survey from WSL Strategic Retail shows that less than 20 percent of pet owners have cut their spending on their pets. The majority of pet owners have continued to purchase premium pet food and products, even as they’ve cut expenses elsewhere.

Turns out, pet supplies are often at the bottom of the cutback list, along with human essentials such as prescription medications and toothpaste.

“Pets are just a key part of the family,” said Shilpa Bharne Rosenberry, senior consultant with WSL. “About 68 percent said they treat their pets as well as their children, and half said it just makes them feel happy to buy nice things for their pets.”

Industry sales are expected to reach $45.4 billion in 2009, compared with $28.5 billion in 2001.

The Dog Walking Biz Trotting

TheRecord.com:

Realtor Mary Bales is too busy to walk her two dogs every afternoon.

The solution is Dog Gone Walking, a pet-care business started seven years ago by Mandy Storey.

“They do a great job,” Bales says. “They love and look after the dogs and give them the exercise in the middle of the day which I am not able to do.”

Bales is one of more than 700 people who use Storey’s service, which includes daily dog walks, cat care and extras like taking pets to their grooming appointments or veterinary visits.

“People don¹t realize how much they need the service” until they start using it, says Storey, who runs the business from her Waterloo home.
