From His Head to Space in 21 Months

WBAY TV:

Filar developed a specialized digital eye camera that attaches to a scope doctors use to look into a patient’s eyes. It plugs into a computer and takes pictures or video, “and I can actually see the inside of the eye here.”

Filar says he had the idea for a portable device like this in his head for years, thinking it would be great for use in remote areas by the military, mission workers, even himself during visits to nursing homes.

Filar finally got serious about it last January. By April he had a working model ready to market.

But he never dreamt of receiving a call like the one earlier this month.

It was NASA on the phone and in less than 21 months, an invention by Wisconsin optometrist has gone from an idea in his head to being used by NASA on the space station.

Inventor Hopes Product Creates Jobs

WMBFNews:

“People constantly complained about the hospital gown,” said Harley Richards, who came up with what he calls the EZ-Gown, a robe he patented which doesn’t have ties, instead uses plastic snaps that close the gown for privacy.

The idea was born out of frustration from patients and people who like him have worked in the medical field for decades.

“They were always having their back side showing,” Richards said referring to patients, whom he said felt they needed more privacy from their gowns.

It took Richards almost four years to get a patent. Then he had to find a place to make his gowns.

A good fit for USNER Products, Inc, said Jim Slonecki, the owner of a small sewing factory in North Charleston.

“It fits our production perfectly and it’s incredibly expandable,” Slonecki said.

Richards said his creation is picking up steam here in the Lowcountry, but he is hoping it gets some national attention.

“You take five or six hospitals that would pick up on a deal and go with it. We could probably employ 16, maybe 20 people,” Richards said.

“If you’re making 50,000 [gowns] you can be much more cost effective and you’ll be much more productive so you can sell it at a much more competitive price,” said Slonecki, who feels like being competitive is key in an industry barely surviving because most of it has gone overseas.

Aside from tapping into private hospitals, Slonecki and Richards goal is to snatch up a government contract. They’ve been working with politicians at the federal level with the hope they can help land a major deal.

Family Finds Niche Selling Scrubs

Chicago Tribune:

Creating a thriving business in this sour economy is a tall order, but one local man has combined technology and ambition into a business plan that is showing promise after only a matter of months.

Combining the convenience of Internet shopping, an ever-expanding medical field and competitive prices, James Bell saw a market niche and has built a nation -wide customer base in a matter of months.

“The site has really taken off in the last month,” he said. “We have had more orders in the last month that the previous two months combined.”

Offering discounts is one way that Bellscrubs.com has generated business early on.

“We offer a 10 percent discount to all students and Facebook friends,” Bell said. “We offer the discount to students because we know how hard things are when you are just starting out. Most students will need to buy scrubs before they have a paying job. Also, we hope by doing this we will gain a customer for the next 30 years.”

One early August morning he found himself lying in bed, his mind consumed with the thought of owning his own online business. Unable to sleep, Bell quietly slipped out of bed and was soon perched in front of the computer screen, searching for information on various Internet businesses.

After several Google searches, a promising link turned up. It was a how-to video on Internet business building. After watching it, Bell joined a program to aid in starting an online business and immediately began devising a business plan.

“At that time I didn’t know what type of business I was going to start, but we decided to give it a try anyway,” Bell said. “After joining the program they gave us a couple of things we needed to do to find a good niche.”
