Will Ebay’s New Terms of Service Effect Your Affiliate Commissions?
I opened my email today and found some information from Ebay on terms fo service coming into effect in August according to their blog.
It’s about what they consider their “Accepted Business Model”. The things that stood out for me were:
*Publishers may only place links and/or promotional content on sites they own. Affiliate links on third party sites such as Craigslist, MySpace, etc. are not allowed.
*You will not redirect any traffic to middle servers for the sole purpose of masking your referring source of traffic. This includes the use of URL shortening services (including but not limited to tinyurl.com, short.to and cloakedlink.com).
Ok, I understand the concept in general.
But why on earth would they stop someone with an affiliate account from seeking traffic from MySpace or another third party site? I can see how posting Ebay affiliate links on Craigslist would probably violate Craigslist’s terms of service, but bands and local businesses could have a presence on MySpace (the site seems pretty well ranked for some local search keywords). Why not link to items they don’t sell on Ebay?
I can see why you wouldn’t from the affiliate’s point of view… hand posting individual links that may constantly change would be a time consuming nightmare. But I don’t see Ebay’s complaint on the surface of things.
How do you react to these new changes? Will they affect your ebay business?

Ebay now on High Tech Affiliate
The other day we welcomed the Amazon Affiliate program to High Tech Affiliate and today we are proud to announce the acceptance of High tech Affiliate as well as our network sites for Easy Search Live and Velocity Marketer into the Ebay Partner Network.
Ebay is fairly exclusive, sites, networks, and network wide traffic and rankings matter so on first apllication you may be turned down because they only allow listing of a single site on the initial form. In our case since the first test site for their campaigns will be High Tech Affiliate we were turned down. But there is still hope, I send off a request late Friday for review and here we are on Monday after I gave the a more extensive list of websites we would be advertising them on, are now approved.
The best recommendation for network and multiple site owners would be to put your best and most related website on the list as primary. More sites can be added later, but as with any affiliate program you see as a great fit don’t let it slide at initial review. Being turned down should be considered as an opportunity to sell your business to their company, to show them it’s value.
High Tech Affiliate was probably turned down on the following point. Low traffic, age of domain, age of site. On first look this website would not be a prime partner but here is what Ebay could not see that turned the process around.
Velocity Marketer hosting will be recommending High Tech Affiliate as a resource for clients to learn Internet Marketing, blog based website design, blogging technique, and social media marketing. In addition we are squashed between two search engines and a large network of related websites and communities that all promote High Tech as a resource for these topics. In addition we are a social media training center for the newly launched Conservative blog Host PCABunited.com so while the traffic numbers are not here now they will be for decades to come.
Presentation is the key to getting accepted as a professional in any industry. The match with E-bay for us in in several categories. Since our primary business is in hosting and online business marketing all our readers have computers and will need tools and supplies. Most of our readers are webmasters and hosting clients and need website scripts and promotion tools sold on Ebay, and all are humans with basic needs and can use the search to find their next topic of interest.
What appears on the outside to not be a match often is and the other company just needs to see a couple things. First the niche and how they will be presented to the sites users, and second that your company is determined to do business with them.
Welcome Aboard E-bay.
High Tech Affiliate is gearing up again.
Hey folks, sorry to be out a couple weeks but life strikes and as a result this High Tech Affiliate is looking for a low tech JOB as the economy has made a bit of a impact on my home business. We are also looking at changing some affiliation and hope to soon welcome Ebay Promotions to help you save money on the latest technology and business related services.
As a matter of fact their review team may be among the first to read this post.
We have also added Amazon’s affiliate program to the mix to offer niche books and music downloads, and have tons of content planned as we use these sources and others to get needed information and opinion on products to review here.
Over the last two weeks I have also been at a mad scramble rate to get PCABUnited, our Conservative Blog Host ready for official launch on May 1st 2009. As a business owner I have to tell you this country and our economy are being handled in a bad manner. There is no way that spending money on the building of roads will create the sustained income that business start up grants, job training, and re-establishing a buy American attitude would for the long term financial well being of our nation. PCABUnited has a saying adopted already and that is that our Tea Parties are 365 days a year.
Conservative Bloggers need to join the PCABU as it will be an exciting resource for decades to come.
My main blog has been moved to PCABUnited.com and the domain AndyZeusAnderson.com will be being revamped and re-designed to tie in all my network sites and interest together. Modern Money Machine has been sidelined as I am looking to use a new content aggregator and website builder we purchased to create a directory of articles and information for those looking to get back to work, find a career, or start a business.
I will also be starting soon on a planned project for another domain I have that will provide a real tie in to all we have learned, will learn, and have shared on social media marketing, social networking, and viral business promotions. Again products from Amazon and Ebay tie in greatly to these sites as there are tons of tools and supplies that are mandated for business and in a tight economy every business needs to seek the best possible prices.
Until we meet again,
Andy Zeus Anderson
