Starting an at-home business?

Question: Starting an at-home business?

(Posted by: sushiis4me on 2010-07-24 11:45:23)

I was just wondering the main things to consider when starting an internet at home business? - Like do we need some sort of licensing or ok from the government? - if transactions are through paypal and it is our main source of income what taxes(if any) have to be paid? - how would we go about copyrighting our material? If there are any other major points that are essential any advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You generally do not need licenses, but that can vary depending on your product (such as food, firearms, ect.) You WILL need to register any trade name (business name) you use with the secretary of state. Nobody on this website can tell you the exact amount of taxes you'll have to pay, but you have to pay taxes on income just like everyone else. Copyright is an often misused term, and you have given us no information about what you're actually trying to do. A copyright protects an original work, such as written documents and music. It's not a patent (prevents someone from stealing your idea) or a trademark (prevents theft of trade name). A previous poster said copyright is automatically given, and that is incorrect. You have to go through the US Copyright office to gain copyright rights, otherwise you have NONE. copyright.gov/

1. "The government " makes no sense. State? Local? Federal? 2. Paypal income is obviously income and thus taxable. 3. Anything you create is automatically copyrighted.
